Brussels, ON – A successful celebration marked the grand opening of the newly expanded Brussels, Morris & Grey Community Centre, Dawson Hallahan delivering remarks at the well-attended event on Saturday, November 16, on behalf of the Honourable Lisa Thompson, Minister of Rural Affairs and Member of Provincial Parliament for Huron—Bruce.
The opening event brought together community members, local leaders, and dignitaries to celebrate the completion of the $8.4 million revitalization project. The expansion, made possible through funding from the Government of Canada, the Government of Ontario, and generous contributions from local municipalities and community donors, adds modern dressing rooms, upgraded washrooms, a new lobby, a fitness gym, and a new viewing area—enhancing the Centre's role as a hub for recreational and sporting activities.
The revitalization of the Centre is a significant milestone for the community. The Government of Canada contributed $1,915,200, and the Government of Ontario added $1,595,840 under the Community, Culture and Recreation Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. Additional support came from the Municipality of Huron East ($1,889,700), the Municipality of Morris-Turnberry ($469,900), and over $2.5 million in donations raised through a community fundraising campaign.
"The Brussels, Morris & Grey Community Centre will offer people from the Municipality of Huron-East and the surrounding area programming that promotes physical activity and builds a sense of community. Investments in projects like this contribute to the well-being of our communities across the country and the people who live there," said the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities.
The event saw a strong turnout, with attendees celebrating not only the completion of the Centre's expansion but also the positive impact it will have on the community. "I am very proud of the sizeable investment our government has made that ultimately enabled the community to renovate and modernize the community centre in Brussels. Thank you to everyone involved who embraced a vision and made it a reality," said Lisa Thompson, Member of Provincial Parliament for Huron—Bruce.
"We are incredibly grateful for the support from the provincial and federal government, which has allowed us to realize this vision," said Mayor Bernie MacLellan. "This project reflects our dedication to enhancing the quality of life in our community, making recreational activities more accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Today's celebration was a testament to the hard work and collaboration that made this expansion possible."
The new facilities are already being put to use, and the community is excited to take full advantage of the enhanced amenities. The upgraded Centre will continue to serve as an important space for local athletes, families, and spectators, while also providing new opportunities for programming that fosters community engagement and physical well-being.
